Prototype Programmer

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Programmer to help us develop and grow our in-house Prototyping capability, as well as supporting our ongoing Production. The successful candidate will play a key role in executing our prototyping strategy, ensuring the timely and high-quality delivery of prototype hardware to our Product Validation Team.

You will help us develop and deliver world-changing technologies, working between the design team and the product validation team to manufacture great prototype hardware.

Key Responsibilities:

Work with the design team to ensure prototype products can be manufactured and realised. This will include:

  • Contributing to design reviews (formal and ad-hoc)
  • Agreeing key dimensions and tolerances with design engineers

Manufacture ‘make’ products for test and validation teams.

  • Generate machine programmes to machine key parts (including 5-axis milling, turn-milling, WEDM, grinding). Programming interface today is FANUC and Heidenhain. Expected to be a mix of CAD/CAM and console programming.
  • Work with operators to ensure parts are made in the right way, to the right delivery deadlines. At times you may be required to set up and operate machines if operators are not available and parts need to be machined.
  • Ensure we carry out the right levels of inspection and reporting.

Support Production with process improvement and new product introduction.

  • Work with Production Manufacturing Engineering to understand any required process improvements or new products to be introduced.
  • Create machining programmes to realise design intent.
  • Support Production Manufacturing Engineers with part quality assurance and any process improvements.

Drive a culture of continuous improvement.

  • Work closely with the test and validation team to assess success of prototype hardware
  • Quickly enable any required re-work on products/rigs to meet desired standards
  • Ensure processes are fit for purpose and always improving

Essential Requirements:

  • Proven experience in programming and operating machines using FANUC and Heidenhain controllers within a manufacturing environment (3+ years experience)
  • Experience in manufacturing precision equipment (<5 micron tolerances)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Highly organised and detail-oriented.

Beneficial Requirements:

  • Experience with New Product Introduction processes
  • Experience in 5-axis milling, grinding, turning, WEDM (training can be provided if not)
  • Experience of machining Additive Manufactured parts
  • Experience of machining hydraulic components
