We are looking for a driven multi-skilled engineer to join the Technology team and take ownership of test rig design, development, and procurement/manufacture. The role will be crucial in successfully delivering on our ambitious goals around the development of our products and systems.

The Rig Design Engineer will work within the V&V team to understand the test needs, build a robust set of requirements, and deliver a test rig solution in a timely manner. This role will involve a great deal of independent design and implementation, and would suit someone that is looking to have total ownership over the design and delivery of a complex electro-mechanical system.

The successful candidate will be competent with electro-mechanical systems (hydraulics experience is beneficial, but not mandatory), familiar with instrumentation and measurement devices (pressure sensors, position sensors, temperature sensors, etc), and will know from experience the typical solutions to motion and control, along with their pros and cons. They will be a driven, practical, and pragmatic individual that takes pride in their work and strives to deliver the best solution in the allotted time. They will also be someone that looks to understand scope to improve existing systems and has a good sense of when to action meaningful improvement activities.

Responsibilities:

  • Designing test rigs, including frames, enclosures, motion control elements (linear actuators or hydraulic actuators), electrical and hydraulic circuits, etc.
  • Creating CAD models and drafting engineering drawings for mechanical elements
  • Reading and creating hydraulic and electrical circuit diagrams
  • Carrying out risk assessments
  • Planning out sequence of activities to manage multiple rig development projects
  • Dealing with sub-contractors (machine shops, component and sub-system suppliers, electricians, etc.
  • Creating and maintaining requirements and design documents
  • Dealing with breakdowns, maintenance activities and bug fixing on current test rigs, as well as carrying out modifications to current rigs as needed

Essential Requirements:

  • Electrical and/or Mechanical Engineering qualification (degree level or equivalent experience)
  • 3+ years’ experience in engineering
  • Experience with managing own workload, working independently within a large team, and progressing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Knowledge of designing electro-mechanical systems from a mixture of off the shelf and bespoke components (with ability to select appropriate manufacturing method)
  • Desire to get hands on with the test rigs and ensure they are performing to requirements
  • Ability to use CAD tools

Beneficial Requirements:

  • Knowledge of industry standards and best practices for design and commissioning of test rigs (or similar systems, such as industrial equipment)
  • Knowledge of industrial electrical circuit design
  • Prior experience with programming electro-mechanical control systems
  • Interest in Software Engineering application in a hardware focused business, specifically in an area like IoT or Robotics
  • Conversant in Python and familiar with version control (GitHub)
  • Experience with machining processes – milling, turning, laser cutting, etc.
