Senior Design Engineer

Role Overview

We are looking for a driven and ambitious senior design engineer to join our design function. The successful candidate will be a key part of our growth and will report to the Design Lead. 

They will work across a range of projects and products including, but not limited to, valves, active suspension systems, compact integrated hydraulic power packs and aircraft braking systems. The candidate will be given both specific and long-term goals within the project or projects they are working on. 

Candidates will be rewarded with 56 days off consisting of 22 days to use as you like, 26 fixed days (alternate Fridays off) + public bank holidays. 

Essential requirements:

• Degree level education in Mechanical Engineering or closely related subject 
• 4 or more years relevant industry experience 
• Experience of mechanical design of complex components 
• Experience analysing mechanical stresses and displacements, using both numerical methods and FEA. 
• Experience with CAD and producing technical drawings 
• High levels of personal accountability and ownership, to effectively deliver on challenging and ambitious targets 
• Strong presentation (both of technical solutions and data) and reporting skills 
• Ability to focus on detail to fully understand issues and drive improvement 
• Technical leadership and mentoring skills 

Beneficial requirements:

• 7 or more years relevant industry experience 
• Experience in hydraulics/servo valve and proportional valve design 
• Understanding of Additive Manufacturing process 
• Understanding of metallurgy and material science 
• Understanding of machining processes and their relevance in mechanical design 
• Understanding of CFD and its application for fluid analysis 
• Basic understanding of wider system technology including electronics, software and control, and its impact on mechanical design 
• Experience working in the Automotive or Aerospace industries 

Key responsibilities:

• Design of prototype and production products – both components and systems 
• Management of product manufacturing documentation, including CAD, drawings, bill of materials and AM build files 
• Finding and communicating with suppliers for prototype production 
• Providing design support throughout product manufacture, assembly and testing 
• Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to deliver world leading products 
• Providing technical direction relating to mechanical design on projects 
• Technical leadership and mentoring, supporting design engineers on larger projects
